The most relaxing thing to me is to be able to smell the freshly dug soil. Finding peace away from the busy routine of children chores of school works, revision and constant reminders of what needed to be done next.
I find it enjoyable to be sieving compost, digging soil, sowing seeds, watching birds flying in the wind, these are a few ways to escape into the fantasy when times are simpler.
There are more to this hobby to be discovered, when I started with the intention to grow carrots.
I contacted a company in China, told them I am testing to grow carrots in my country. Got a huge pack of carrot seeds from China. It dawned on me this is not easy. There are so many varieties of carrots and they need different conditions to sprout. I was never really successful with this.
Then I started with tomatoes, after my 1st child arrived. She loves tomatoes and I started growing some. This proves to be a much easier endeavour.
How to germinate tomato from seeds?
Growing tomatoes from seeds is a great way to get a jump start on your garden. Not only is it economical, but it also allows you to choose from a wide variety of varieties. Tomatoes are one of the most popular and versatile vegetables, and growing them from seed allows you to customize your crop to your tastes.
The first step in growing tomatoes from seed is to purchase the seeds. There are many varieties available, including heirloom, hybrid, and organic. Choose the variety that best suits your needs and tastes. Once you have the seeds, it’s important to start them indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.
Start by filling a seed-starting tray with a seed-starting mix. Moisten the mix with warm water and then sprinkle the seeds on top. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and place the tray in a warm spot. Make sure to keep the soil moist but not wet.
When the seedlings have grown to about two inches tall, it’s time to transplant them into individual pots. Use a potting mix that is specially formulated for tomatoes and fill the pots with the mix. Plant the seedlings at the same depth as they were in the seed tray and water them thoroughly.
Once the seedlings are about four inches tall, it’s time to harden them off. This means gradually exposing them to the outdoor environment by placing them outside for increasing amounts of time each day.
Finally, when all danger of frost has passed, it’s time to transplant them into the garden. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil and dig a hole for each plant. Place the plant in the hole and fill the hole with soil. Water the plants thoroughly and add a layer of mulch to help retain moisture.
Growing tomatoes from seed is a rewarding experience and can provide you with a delicious crop of tomatoes all season long. With a little patience and care, you can have a bountiful harvest.
Try it and you will not regret this.
