A World Without Care for Marine Life
I woke up to a morning in a world that was completely different from the one I had known. My throat was dry after a few breaths. As I looked out of the window, I saw the ocean full of algae and was putrid.
FLOWER Wooden Stand with 5 Test Tubes
I knew immediately that this was a world without fish or sharks. We had killed all the sea life with our recklessness and disregard for the environment, and now we were paying the ultimate price.
It all started off when us humans got greedy. As a society, we have always overfished our waters and it finally caught up to us. We started to have way more serious algae blooms because of the lack of fish. On top of that, we started to kill all the sharks for their fins, destroying the food chain. There were more polluted oceans with algae and the sea plants started to die because there was no sunlight. The herbivorous fish started to die as there were not enough plants to eat. The carnivorous fish died as there were not enough plant-eating fish. As a result, there was a lack of seafood.
As I walked through the neighbourhood, I saw a few fishmongers on the street begging for money as there were no more fish for them to catch. The people were stuck in their homes as the oceans were too polluted to play at the beach.
I knew immediately that this was not sustainable. We had destroyed the very thing we had that gave us fish and fun, and now we were paying the ultimate price. Boredom had skyrocketed and the longer we stayed at home, the fatter we became. That had led to heart attacks and other diseases.
If we could turn back time, governments could have enforced fishing quotas- fishing quotas or "transferable quotas", which sets a quota on certain species to prevent overfishing and ensure the fishes survival. The governments could ban trawler nets.
First Day Jitters (The Jitters Series)
As a result of prolonged and widespread overfishing, nearly a third of the world's fisheries are now in deep trouble. Overfishing endangered ocean ecosystems by severely impacting the natural food pyramid diet of the billions of people who rely on seafood as a key source of protein. If the demand for fish continues to increase as supply falls, the price of fish will rise even further and fishing can become harder and less efficient when the ecosystem is disrupted.
Fish are the first vertebrates on Earth and evolved into the diverse array of vertebrates you see today. Since more than 73% of Earth's surface is covered with water, shouldn’t fish also have the right to live? I hope I have convinced you today to change the way you look at our beautiful oceans. So please, love our ocean friends!
